Cáceres

Spain is hard for hitchiking, I had heard. I started to feel it immediatly (although I would have a much stronger confirmation later). After about an hour I accepted the offer of a family from Burgos who would drop me a few kilometers ahead, at an intersection where I might be luckier. The only problem, which we were not aware: it was on the highway, and it would be almost impossible for a car to stop there in safety. continued with them, being dropped in Cáceres instead. They offered me some cardboard to write my destination and also some food, and before returning to the roadside I ate and rested under a tree. There, I tried, card in hand for more than three hours, in 30+ degrees heat, feeling for the first time a slight irritation with the people who would not take me these few last kilometers. "I'm not in a hurry" I kept reminding myself, until a guy, who had seen me a hour before standing in the same spot, finally gave me the ride I needed. I arrived in Mérida before the sunset.
Badajoz

The day started with Carlos, on his way to pick up his brother and famous portuguese singer-songwriter Vitorino Salomé. A relaxed and funny conversation kept my good mood as I arrived to Elvas, on the border to Spain. From there a brazilian man took to a gas station outside Badajoz, telling me about his young son who suffered a serious accident and is now completely dependent on him. I got out of the car. While not religious myself, I feel I cannot ignore the spiritual side of this trip, and will keep his advice in mind.

My first hitchiking on this trip took me close to Borba, where I was picked up by Helena and their mother and nephew. This amazing family offered me dinner and a (very confortable) bed where I slept for the night. Their amability, as well as the conversations with Helena, an experienced backpacker and Viapassana meditator, infused me with good energy and was the perfect start for my trip. Muito obrigado.
